Team takes on marathon walk to raise funds in memory of much-loved colleague

Tuesday 22 May 2025

The Ophthalmology Department at Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals (WHH) has completed a 42km walking challenge to raise funds for a sensory garden in memory of their friend and colleague, Tracey Parry.

The Giant Walk, which took place on Saturday 10 May, saw the team travel from Hale in Merseyside to Hale in Cheshire, following a scenic route along the Mersey estuary, the Manchester Ship Canal, Bridgewater Canal and through the heart of Stockton Heath. The team completed the walk in nine hours, ending at the Millennium Clock in Hale village.

The challenge raised more than £3,000 for the creation of a bespoke sensory garden outside the Ophthalmology Department at Warrington Hospital – a calm and therapeutic outdoor space designed to support the wellbeing of patients, families and staff.

Tracey Parry, who sadly passed away in July 2023 at the age of 52, worked as a member of the Orthoptic Team for more than 25 years. She was known for her warmth, dedication and tireless support for patients with additional needs.

Frances Midgley, Advanced Orthoptist at WHH, said: “We all embraced the challenge wholeheartedly – it was a special way to come together as a team and remember Tracey. Parts of the route passed through places where she used to run her orthoptic clinics, which made it even more meaningful. As we neared the finish line, the church bells rang – completely by coincidence – and it felt like a special moment for all of us. We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved together.”

WHH Charity has launched a new appeal to raise funds for the garden, which will serve as a lasting tribute to Tracey and the care she gave to so many over the years. To donate, visit the dedicated JustGiving page.
